Phobia

Necrophobia– Fear of the dead

Necrophobia is the excessive fear of dead things, which may have been developed through being forced to attend a funeral as a child or witnessing a death. This phobia can serve as a serious condition, which involves medication and therapy-  As this fear affects those who have this phobia and can be triggered by dead animals, furenal of a loved one etc…

2 versions of the same footage- 1. silent version/ 2. not silent.

My chosen idea-

Teenage girl wakes up in an unknown place- she realises after a while from looking around her surroundings that she is on a bed, covered by a sheet in a morgue. She tries to escape by opening the door, but ends up losing her balance and falling onto the floor. She falls into a trolley with a body on it. The arm swings from the trolley, across her chest and with horror, she passes out on the floor. She has a flashback back to where her phobia began- of her 8 years old in her grandmas house- where everything seems normal- until she wakes up the following day.

2 other Ideas

DancingPuppet3_248Trans‘Coulrophobia’– Scarlet is in her bedroom up late one friday night. She gets a call from her bestfriend, Becky explaining that she had to go to the circus with her little brother, Cody and asked her if she could tag along. Scarlet accepts and it skips to the scene where its the day of the circus. Scarlets late, Becky & Cody are already inside and Cody is getting impatient. Cody runs off and Scarlet and Becky go in search to find him. They decide to search inside a tent-inside there is the main stage and a row of seats. In comes the accouncer- circus full of clowns- Cody turns into a clown- cliff hanger ending!

‘Clownclaus’- This story is set at Christmas time, the happiest time of the year for children…but not for all! When christmas comes, it’s a decision of whether you’ve been naughty or nice. If you’ve been nice- you recieve presents, but if you’ve been naughty, you get a visit from Clownclaus!gallianos-circus-1

  • Emma- 11 years old
  • Jack- 6 years old
  • Emma knows about Clownclaus and why he comes at christmas. Teaches Jack how to stay nice and prevent Clownclaus from ever visiting.
  • See death on the news- every christmas, a child disappears- ‘unexplainable death’– police claim.
  • Parents don’t believe thier children- until typically someone dies- that in meaning until they get a visit- cliff hanger!

Who wants to be a Millionaire. REVAMP!

Role of a set designer-

The Role of a set designer is to be in charge of designing and creating a variety of different sets- which normally appear in films, TV programmes and theatre. With this role, it’s important to help good social skills, when working and communicating with producers, directors, costume designers, etc…

WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?

BEFORE

Camera Positioning-

There are 3 camera’s on the set.

  • C1- Which helps show a close up of the contestant- this camera is positioned on the left.

  • C2- This camera produces the wide angle of both the contestant and the presenter- this camera is positioned in the middle.

  • C3- This camera produces the close up shot of just the presenter, this camera is positioned on the right of the set.

    Layout-

  • Circular layout-  circular flooring- matches with the logo
  • 4 sets of illuminated stairs
  • Big TV screen in the middle
  • Table in the middle/monitors on the table- chairs either side- (left- contestant/right- presenter)
  • Walk way
  • FullSizeRender

Lighting-

At the beginning when the contestants are competing for the chance to win 1 million pounds. When they are answering the question, the light acted as a temporary spotlight, quickly flashing over the contestants one by one.- this helps to add drama and create suspension.

The lighting contrasted with the soundtrack, the flashing of lights at the beginning move forward to light up the flooring, the lighting appears to spread to both sides but it helps light up stage center. Again with the contrast of music and lighting- it helps to add drama, suspense, atmosphere and mood.

There is light illuminating from the stair well, which helps to add a bit of colour to the stage as well to provide a bit of light.

milllitset1.jpg

There is a circle of lighting, above center which lights the centre of the stage.

Use of Colour-

The use of dark colours such as: Blue, Purple and Black- helps make the lighting more dramatic and effective. There isn’t a huge amount of colour used on the set or in game. When an answer is selected- it turns orange and when the answer is correct- it flashes green. In the newer ‘modern’ setup- the stairs are illuminated, which runs through near center of the stage- this helps add a bit of colour and decoration.

Music/Sound effect-

Confirming an answer- The music changes- to a tune that’s sounds dramatic.

When the contestants are competing for the chance to win 1 million pounds, with the simultaneously lights flashing one by one.- there is fast, rhythmic music playing- acting as a countdown till the reveal of the answer- which plays in unison to the light switching.

Heartbeat- The music plays while the contestant is under the pressure of picking the ‘correct’ answer.- adds the suspense and the pressure.

Logo-

This logo sticks with the colour scheme: The hues of purple and blue, the silver and gold effect as well. The colours you may link with wealth and fortune. Very simple and classy colours, that work well with each other and show status.

PROCESS OF MY IDEAS

MY FINAL DESIGN:

MOOD BOARD

mood board 2

Concept art-

Layout-

Camera positioning:

I’ve kept the camera positions the same as before because it worked well with the layout I went with and it brings an old element of the ‘classic’ who wants to be a millionaire feel back to it.

Colour:

The colour for the ‘new millionaire’ set will be green, because I wanted to get away from the dark colours of blue and purple, but still have something to help represent wealth and fortune. I’ve used two different shades of green: minty green and a normal, light green to help add contrasts of colour and help make the set look bright and more modern. I’ve used panels behind the contestant panels to help add flare and interest to the simple design. I used a dash of colour within the furniture e.g the ‘M’ shaped chairs are white and have a minty green cushion- as well as the ‘M’ help represents the word ‘MILLONAIRE’. Along with the fanned out look and colour of the panels, it is represented as fanned out money, which matches my logo. The colour of the chairs are white to help the colour of the floor and background stand out more. I wanted to use the concept of linking colour with a certain sum of money- like red- £100- orange- £1,000, yellow- £32,000 and green- Million. So that they would have more of an aim- get out of the red and into the green!- (becomes the catchphrase)

Lighting:

There is a long panel of mini spotlights in the centre above, the main stage. Which beams down, in the stage middle where the contestant and presenter sits. This helps to add drama, as it lights up that particular area and makes the surrounding area dark. It creates tension for the contestant- which helps with the contrast of the same original soundtrack used within the original set up. I also like the idea of mini spotlights peering out between the fanned out panels, e.g. First everything would be dark, music plays, lights between the panels light up as the presenter enters- he stands in the door way- introducing the question to the contestants- spotlights on the contestants, with the same music in time with the blinking spotlights. Then the whole stage lights up when the contestant has got the answer right- then dark when he’s playing for a million pounds.

Music:

I want to the music to stay the same, even though I’ve modernised the ‘Who wants to be a millionaire set’, I still want it to be liked for the change and the similarities between the classic original. Along with the fact that I want it to be recognisable, even though I could change it slightly, I would rather keep it the same, which applies to the soundtrack as well.

Logo:

I went for something completely different for the logo, instead of using the circular style and then changing how it was presented in the middle. I used the idea of the fanned out panels (money) as my logo, because it was a simple design with my intentions of showing wealth, as well as it is recognisable.

My Review on the ‘City of God’

Title: City of God

Star Rating:

Director: Fernando Meirelles & Katia Lund

Cast: Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, Alice Braga, Phellipe Haagensen

PLOT: The story of two boys living within the violent inhabiting’s of Rio’s de Janeiro favelas. With the decisions in follow different paths, one becomes a drug dealer while the other becomes a photographer.

CITY OF GOD is filled with violence and Inspiration, which is the subject to a variety of opinions and people’s interpretation. Meirelles and Lund’s co-operation on the 2002 film, ‘City of God’ rocketed with its huge success in achieving four Oscar nominations. Consumed ticket sales of 300.1 million were a sell out at the screening of 2002 Cannes film festival, obtaining the largest domestic audience in 2003. Meirelles work has been compared to the superior Scorsese, who directed ‘GoodFellas’ an 6 academy award winning film and from there, claimed title of third best director. The aim was to bring the hidden side of Rio de Janeiro favelas into play like Scorsese displayed through the inspiration of his neighbourhood in little Italy. Through the power of non-linear narrative, young Rocket’s (Alexandre Rodrigues) story of his big break as photographer is narrated from the start, throughout his young life, facing ordeals with his brother and his gang, and worst of all Lil Ze (Leandro Firmino). Who is a psychopathic thug with twisted ambitions of taking over the slums. Rockets career is surely hanging in the balance, of whether he succeeds his dream and escapes the slums. Meirelles and Lund uses the power of emotion to deliver a live performance.

Fernando’s character suits the right tone well, as leader of a criminal gang and re-nouned drug dealer. Competing with slick sidekick that is Benny (Phellipe Haagensen) who later becomes playboy and gets the girl, Angelica (Alice Braga).

The duration could be have been 15 mins shorter, introducing the Tender Trios at the beginning with their pointless existence, in helping link the boy’s different decision together. Along with the upsides and downsides of displaying that horrific scene that gave ‘City of God’ it’s unforgettable mark. When Lil Ze made a little boy choose which out of the two boys to shoot, offering the choice of hand or foot. To make matters worse, the boy’s emotion was too real, with the addition that this violent scene in particular stood out from all the others.

VERDICT Jam packed with violence, a take on the hidden reality of Rio’s favelas. A new outlook on modern film and its performance.

City of GOD

THE FILM:

Plot: City of God revolves around peoples stories who links through violent acts of the hidden, but sadly true parts of Rio’s Favelas. But this story is really about two boys, who decide to follow different paths. For Lil Dice he turns into a drug dealer, unlike Rocket who wants to become a photographer. Rocket narrates the story through his own perspective of violent life and the constant theme of never-ending revenge.

Critic responses-

What the critics had to say, ‘A shocking and disturbing, but always compelling look at life in the slums of Rio de Janiero.’ –Rottentomatoes – 97% of the audience liked the film.

This film received a rating of 8.9 on Metacritic

‘An intoxicating shot of cinematic adrenaline, “City of God” starts with a desperate chicken escaping slaughter and being chased by a gang of pistol-packing prepubescents.’ –Nev Pierce chicken_sombrero.gif

‘Shocking, frightening, thrilling and funny, “City of God” has the substance to match its lashings of style. Cinema doesn’t get more exhilarating than this.’-Nev Pierce

‘City of God is both a shocking and inspiring story about life in the crime filled slums of Rio de Janerio.’ –Dustin Jansick

‘Yeah, Cidade de Deus is violent as hell. The first time I saw it, I was sick to my stomach and was just generally really, really disturbed. It’s good, but I still feel kind of a weird hatred toward it because it is so violent, but I still like it. Weird.’ – Alex

Success or failure?-

The film was a huge box-office success which is why it is still remembered today. ‘City of God’ won 4 Oscar nominations and from its success, it was compared with Martin Scorsese’s film, ‘GoodFellas’. Leandro Firmino who played Lil Ze is still recognised for his role, 10 years later- he says – ‘It’s gone pretty fast, I’m surprised people remember it. It’s very much alive, even among children of 11 or 12.’ At the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, the screening of the film gained the largest audience of domestic film in 2003- 300.1 million tickets were sold.

DIRECTOR: Fernando Meirelles

Meirelles is a Brazilian film director, screen writer and producer who is best known for his work on the 2002 film, City of God. He has made many other films such as: Blindness (2008), 360 (2011), Rio, I Love You (2014) and City of Men (2007). Meirelles studied architecture at university in Sao Paulo, where he had developed an interesr into filmmaking.

Director- other films-

Xingu- 2011

Jose and Pilar- 2010

Maids- 2001

Style-

Meirelles is a director who hates violent movies, yet he shows a lot of brutality within directing his films. His directing style is described as sharp, combined with using an upbeat soundtrack, which helps contribute with the films intensity- which has Meirelles style doesn’t show the beauty of Rio within the Favelas, but the hidden and sadly true reality of it. He makes films that are impossible to forget through the works of what it seems ‘real life’ performance.

  • Theme he explores- He explores into his Brazilian background, he likes to learn more about his Brazilian culture and explores his knowledge through his love of film.

DIRECTOR: Kátia Lund

Kátia Lund is an American-Brazilian film director and screenwriter. She was a co-director in the film, ‘City of Gods’ and is most notable from the success of the film. Lund helped Meirelles train the cast for six months so they could get the best performance out of them as possible. Unfortunately she was not nominated for an Oscar co-nominee for her part in the film. Her aim, it seems is to be recognised and gain the respect ,I think she deserves.
